LATTAFA SHAHD

Shahd takes its name from the Arabic word for honey, and it is one of the softer, more powdery things Lattafa makes rather than a spiced or oud-heavy one. Almond and orange open it, orris, jasmine, tuberose and ylang-ylang fill the middle, and amber, praline, musk and vanilla close it warm. The almond and praline give it a marzipan quality that keeps the white florals from turning sharp, while the orris adds a dry powdery lift over the top. It is a comfortable, close-wearing scent rather than a statement one, which makes it easy to wear through a working day.

Expert Answers

What does Lattafa Shahd smell like?
Almond and orange at the start, then a white-floral heart of orris, jasmine, tuberose and ylang-ylang, closing on amber, praline, musk and vanilla. It reads powdery and slightly marzipan-like rather than sharp, and it stays fairly close to the skin.
Does it actually smell of honey?
Not literally. Shahd is Arabic for honey and the name describes the warmth rather than a honey note in the formula. What creates that impression is the almond and praline sitting over amber and vanilla, which together read sweet and slightly waxy in the way honey does.
Is Shahd suitable for men?
Yes, though it leans soft and powdery rather than sharp or woody. The almond, praline and vanilla give it a gourmand warmth that works on anyone, and the florals in the middle are creamy rather than bright. If you prefer something drier, Lattafa's oud releases will suit you better.
When is the best time to wear Shahd?
It suits cooler weather best, because the amber and vanilla base needs a little warmth from the skin to open up and can feel heavy in high heat. It works through a normal working day as well as in the evening, since it stays close rather than projecting across a room.
What is orris, and what does it add?
Orris is the dried root of the iris, one of the most expensive materials in perfumery. It smells dry, powdery and faintly like violets, and perfumers use it to add a soft, expensive-feeling lift. In Shahd it keeps the almond and praline from reading purely as dessert.
